What is the First Judicial District? How are judges elected? How long do they serve for? How do I view a bail hearing?

Judges have immense power when it comes to our criminal justice system yet the public knows little when it comes to the terms of their election and their behavior in our courts. From Meek Mill to cash bail, judges are responsible for upholding many of the policies that perpetuate structural oppression under the guise of "law and order." If we are going to end mass incarceration and achieve Mass Liberation, we must have a deeper understanding of all of the actors in our system, from the FOP to bail magistrates.

The Judge Accountability Table (https://judgeaccountabilitytable.org) is a coalition of community organizations that have come together in the shared mission of holding judicial candidates and our courts accountable to a vision of justice that is in line with our own. Join us for a teach-in where we'll give an overview of the makeup of the Philly Courts, how judges are elected, and what we can do to hold them more accountable.
