Our Mass Liberation Taskforce has grown so much this year. Since our last general meeting in August, our communities have suffered more police violence, continued devastation due to COVID-19 and housing and food insecurity, all while the Philadelphia Police Department has tried to get millions more in tax payer dollars. The conditions inside the local jails and state prisons we’re already inhumane, but they’ve only gotten worse this year and folks on the inside face retaliation for speaking out about the risk of COVID-19 and the health hazards created by poor facility maintenance. It’s growing harder for loved ones and attorneys on the outside to stay in contact with them, and the situation with the courts is unconstitutional, with judges blocking access to hearings that must be publicly accessible.
